• The continuing story of the district nurses, families they care for in the east end, it is very captivating during 2nd world war and how they all coped. Can't wait for next volume to come out, hopefully soon!

• This book is a great read. It is written in the first person by an author, who is dedicated to wildlife conservation and has an incredible love for wild animals of the bush. The author had left his engineering profession in order to build a camp out in the wilds. He recruited an incredibly dedicated staff with the help of his faithful friend Msomi. Nokuthula (meaning Place of Peace) was the name of the camp. His purpose was to host guests from all over the world and show them the beauty of the bush and the animals that inhabit them.
  
  His companion, Msomi, knew the ways of the animals and had taught him so much about animal behavior. The two became very close friends and their relationship was one of complete trust. Msomi is truly a rough diamond and without him, the author would never have achieved what he did. The book makes great reading and the chapters are simple, short and anecdotal in many ways. Each chapter is a gem, having its own story and an ending that gives one an appetite to read the next chapter. One feels the empathy of the author throughout as well as his relationship with his lady partner.
  
  The adventures of the guests, many of whom had no knowledge of African wild life, also gave a hand in certain life threatening situations that they had experienced while touring the bush with a Land Rover led by the author and his incredible friend and helper, Msomi. What I liked about the book is the dedication of the author to the wilds of Africa and the way he instills his love of that to the reader. The author is also a dedicated photographer with a 135 mm camera. These adventures occurred before the advent of digital photography.
  
  This book is an excellent read especially for those readers who love wild life of all kinds and it does whet the appetite of the more adventurous to tour the African bush.
• I've read many books about game reserves, safari guides, African farms, and especially African wildlife. This is one of the best. Connell is a skillful writer and his love--and understanding--of the people and animals in his life make this "story" very special. Msomi is the focal point, of course--wise, amusing, and often poignant. The book reads as smoothly as good fiction and it's full of wonderful information about animals, life in the bush, running a photographic-safari lodge, and the customs of the local people. There are some hilarious anecdotes and a couple of heartbreaking events, so the emotional impact ranges the entire spectrum. Connell's sensitivity and compassion--and humor--shine through every page. I hated to reach the end! Fortunately, he has written another book about this time in his life, "Elephants Are People, Too."
• Brian has written an enjoyable book, and one can well appreciate his values in terms of the kind of camp he has created. After having read at least 5 similar stories by guides working in Southern Africa there is a similarity to stories that lessens the impact if one were only reading the first one....great love for animals and the bush, risky behavior at times in getting guests or self close to the animals, and gutsy courage when facing difficult circumstances with an angry .....(add name of animal). Msomi is an unusual person and adds to the stories, so that is one significant difference in this particular set of stories.
• If you have also lived in Africa, Brian Connell’s beautifully crafted memoir will make you home sick with longing for the people, sights, and smells of the bush, and yearn for the special sound of peace in the wild. It is a three-way love story. A man (Brian) with a mission to build a game lodge – Nokuthula – Place of Peace; assisted by Msomi (with his clever, didactic and humorous stories, delivered with near theatrical skills) and Robert (the go-to white man to fix things). Brian’s detailed telling of the sweat, blood and tears, that accompanied the creation of something beautiful in the middle of the bush, is worth every word. The landscape, the typography, the light and the darkness are tangible elements brought to life. Msomi’s explanations of almost every spot stain and marking of each of the animals, are completely credible and immensely entertaining.
  Thank you Brian for sharing a wonderful experience, with all the bittersweet tears of joy, sadness, and ultimate exhaustion and continued hope. The book is also an antidote for the depression felt by conservationists, and wildlife lovers everywhere, as the multimedia daily blast of bad news continues relentlessly. “Elephants, Rhinos, killed by poachers; corrupt politicians work hand in hand with ivory traders, etc.”
  This book is a must read.
• Wonderful story of a man following his passion. His love of nature and animals leads him to build a community so clients can visit and experience the best Africa has to offer. Msomi, his friend and mentor, helps him in this endeavor to build the community, teaches him how to read and understand animal behavior and the customs of Africa. What an adventure. It brought back memories of my own trip to Africa on safari a couple of years ago. It is one I will never forget.
  
  Brian Connell really knows how to share his love of Africa with the reader.
• Omg. What an incredible sharing of life in the. South African Bush. What resonated for me were two things that deeply touched my soul. Being still in the Bush and letting its wonder come to you and meeting some amazing Shaangan and Zulu trackers and guides. I miss the SA BUSH more than I can say. Also miss the wine and wonderful food. Thank you Brian for sharing your experiences especially with the cheetahs my favorite cat. Look forward to reading your other books.

• I'm a big Sophie Kinsella fan, I have read and re-read several of her books and always find them hysterical. This book was a real disappointment, not funny and in places inappropriate. I find it sad that she felt obligated to add these unnecessary for the story situations. I have always felt comfortable recommending her books to all age groups but now I feel that I won't be able to do that. I am sorry to say I was very disappointed and would not recommend this one!
• I'm a huge Sophie Kinsella fan, I re-read several of her books yearly and I find her hysterical. This book fell really flat compared to most of her work, not as much "life" as she usually has in her writing, not particularly funny and the love story took some unfortunate turns. Very sad to say I was disappointed after reading this long awaited new novel!
• Fixie Farr fixes everything. But she is also somewhat of a doormat with her siblings riding roughshod over her, She saves a laptop of businessman Seb and he commences the debt cycle. Eventually, the two become involved, but things go awry. Meanwhile, the Farr family shop is quickly going downhill. Honestly, I didn't really care for any of the main characters for half of the book. But then Kinsella turns the novel Around as Fixie turns the shop around after finding her backbone. There is much growth in the characters in this story. Ultimately, it's worth reading. Some of my favorite parts were when Fixie was giving certain people some hard truths. Thanks to NetGalley for the advance copy.
• I really enjoyed the writing style of this story. & I really enjoyed the second half but to be honest it felt like a struggle to get myself there. Fixie is meek, humble, and caring however she’s also timid and insecure and that apart of her character growth. It just it felt like it took so long to get there. There were so many times I saw such obvious red flags and I just knew that would be the moment and it wasn’t.. Several times over. If you can stick it out great but it just a pretty okay/good book.
• The plotline is too predictible... I did not like Fixie from the start (she's just too weak and too dumb) and I did not enjoy seeing her making all the wrong moves. I usually loves Kinsella's books (my fav is twenties girl) but this one is just bad. I hope she'll do better in her next book.
• I’ve read every one of Kinsella’s book, and will continue to read any new ones, but I’m wondering if she’s past her prime?! Her first several caused good out loud laughter, this one needed endurance to read. Certainly picked up the last 1/3, but the first 2/3 was challenging to get through. Okay read, but nothing grand.
• Fixie Farr has always lived by her father’s motto “Family first.” And since her dad passed away, leaving his charming housewares store in the hands of his wife and children, Fixie spends all her time picking up the slack from her siblings instead of striking out on her own. The way Fixie sees it, if she doesn’t take care of her father’s legacy, who will?
  
  It’s simply not in Fixie’s nature to say no to people. So when a handsome stranger in a coffee shop asks her to watch his laptop for a moment, she not only agrees—she ends up saving it from certain disaster. To thank Fixie for her quick thinking, the computer’s owner, Sebastian, an investment manager, scribbles an IOU on a coffee sleeve and attaches his business card. Fixie laughs it off—she’d never actually claim an IOU from a stranger. Would she?
  
  But then Fixie’s childhood crush, Ryan, comes back into her life, and his lack of a profession pushes all of Fixie’s buttons. As always, she wants nothing for herself—but she’d love Seb to give Ryan a job. No sooner has Seb agreed than the tables are turned once more and a new series of IOUs between Seb and Fixie—from small favors to life-changing moments—ensues. Soon Fixie, Ms. Fixit for everyone else, is torn between her family and the life she really wants. Does she have the courage to take a stand? Will she finally grab the life, and love, she really wants?
  
  My Thoughts From the very first lines of I Owe You One, I was captivated by Fixie and her foibles. Always wanting to fix things, happily giving in to others and their needs, and putting her own wishes and dreams on hold in favor of the shop and the family made her lovable. But how would she get what she wanted?
  
  A bystander, like this reader, might think of giving her a little push now and then; after all, what good is all the sweetness if her voice is unheard?
  
  I loved Fixie’s serendipitous meeting with Seb Marlowe, and their cute “coffee sleeve” notes back and forth.
  
  I couldn’t stand her siblings Jake and Nicole, who were arrogant and had no problem shoving her out of the way and taking over the shop, even when she knew their ways would not work.
  
  Finally, however, there were some defining moments that brought a halt to Fixie’s martyrdom…and a way for her to start getting what she needed.
  
  The ending felt a little rushed, in that a big misunderstanding was quickly resolved by others on Fixie’s behalf, and I was disappointed not to be part of that conversation. But everything worked out, so I’m giving this delightful story 4.5 stars.
• Either i have graduated from silly little books or this is my least favorite Kinsella book, and i think my last. I couldn’t even get past the third chapter without total boredom kicking in. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because I still love the “Shopaholic” books.
