"Do you love crafts? Sure you do, but perhaps you’re thinking that science projects just aren’t on your short list of fun ones. Think again, because some of the crafts in this book are super fun to make! Most of the materials you’ll need are readily available around the house. Many of them can even be found in your recyclable bin (go green!). For example, if you decide to make a Pizza Solar Oven, you can snag a pizza box out of that bin. Solar ovens can be expensive, but when you go green they are not only fun, but inexpensive. For example, in addition to that pizza box, you’ll need a pencil, ruler, utility knife, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, black electrical tape, school blue, a piece of black paper, and an aluminum pie tin.
Hmmm, you might be saying to yourself, that might just make science a tad more fun than you thought! The step-by-step instructions with pics make this project an easy one to understand. Thirty minutes later, you’ll have your very own solar oven. You also might be thinking there’s not a lot of science in this craft project, but you’d be wrong. In the Science Takeaway you’ll learn that “In a solar oven, sunlight is reflected by the aluminum foil into the oven. The light is absorbed by the black paper, converted to heat, and trapped inside the oven by the plastic window. In ideal conditions, this solar oven can heat up to about 160°F to 200°F (71°C to 93°C).†Whew! Bet you never knew there was so much “science†in crafts.
You’ve probably made a paper airplane and perhaps even tried to see how far it would go. Everyone can do that, but how about a Hovering Aircraft? Drones are really cool, but expensive like those solar ovens. Now that sounds like one cool project (it is). If you’re the crafty sort, you probably have everything you need to create a hovercraft, “a vehicle that glides over a surface by hovering upon an air cushion.†You’ll need one pop-top plastic tab from a bottle or jar (go green, again!), a hot glue gun w/sticks, an old CD or DVD, and a medium-sized balloon. In a mere fifteen minutes, you’ll have your hovercraft. And the science in this project? You’ll just have to read this book to find out!
This series, 30-Minute Makers, is an excellent one to introduce students to the high-interest world of DIY projects in the world of science, technology, engineering, and math. There isn’t a single youngster in the intended age range for these books I know that doesn’t enjoy craft projects, whether it be for duct tape wallets or things like friendship bracelets. The home- and school-based projects included in this book are perfect ones to interest even the most reluctant students. The book is prefaced by brief instructions, including the fact that some of these projects will need adult supervision. The layout of the book is busy, but not cluttered and includes photographs and Science Takeaway sidebars.
Each two-page spread includes the timeframe needed to complete each project, the materials needed, and step-by-step photographic visuals and instructions. I really love the Science Takeaway sidebars, mini-tutorials that subtlety introduce those STEM concepts. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, a Wrapping Up section (includeing a QR code for more science projects), and additional recommended book and website resources. This is an excellent book to add to the homeschool, school, or library shelves. The library copy is Muscle Bound, perfect for continued use in the classroom setting.
