- This book is amazing! It's like taking a set of mechanical, electrical, and software "practitioner-level" courses focused on robotics at your local community college, but only costs you what's equivalent to a modest dinner for one person. Gordon McComb's writing style is incredibly easy to read, and is jammed packed with loads of practical knowledge of the above topics. Even if you never intend on building a robot, but want to learn about "things" and "being handy" you will finish this book with dozens of practical technical skills that you never had before. This book is unquestionably one of my best non-fiction book purchases, and gets a prime spot on my bookshelf because I will refer back to it often.
- This book is a masterpiece of detail. From basic shop techniques in mechanical fabrication, to soldering techniques, to explaining the "IF" statement, to programming microcontrollers, to power transistor interfaces for microcontrollers this book has it all. If you are a mechanic, the electrical interface, motor and software information will be a hit. If you are an experienced programmer the information on building mechanical devices will be invaluable. I bought the book to gain insight into computer / mechanical device interfacing - but I got a lot more than I hoped. A total novice should be able to build, program and run interesting and relatively inexpensive robots with the projects detailed in the book.
- I remember the older versions which were more simply illustrated, clear and concise. This version feels quite cluttered and lacks the "folksy", diy feel of earlier versions. I have a sense that they are trying to pack way too much information into one book and therefore provide less information about any particular subject. It has more on a "overview" feel than a practical feel. Perhaps this is somewhat necessary with the rapid changes in technology that we see today, but I miss the older, more clear versions.
- As a life-long electronics experimenter, I found this book to be packed with useful information for anyone involved in robotics. It has helped me to validate or adjust the things that I "already knew", and has provided guidance for the robotics-centric topics that I have just started getting into. It has a great deal of reference material for mechanical and electrical aspects of robotics development. There are also many links to good online sources of information and robotics parts suppliers that don't always show up in Google searches.
- My five year old son was wants to build robots when he gets older for a career. So I have been studying on how to build the most basic ones, so we can both discover the art of robot making. This book is very easy to follow, he is even able to pick it up. We have read this together, and I helped him learn the information he doesnt know. I'd like to say he has learned how to read because of this book.

Lot's of good information to trigger ideas with. - I can see why other reviewers refer to this book as THE starting point for budding robot enthusiasts. It is very well written, and easy to understand. The author clearly is passionate about his craft, and keen to share his knowledge with his readers. While I have not delved into actually building my robot yet, I really enjoy reading, and re-reading sections of this book. Every idea, every explanation feels very accessible. Now all i have to do is find the time to jump in and start my creation. If you're interested in building your own robot, this book is the perfect place to start.
- I am brand new to the world of amatuer robotics, and this was an excellent first book for me to read. By the time I finished reading the book, I knew where to begin with my initial design, and I had several sources of parts. It took from zero to 80%.
There are several small errors in the book, but none of them are show stoppers.
The only flaws in the book were the same problems with any survey book. The examples tended to show only one way to address an issue, some of the plans lacked enough detail, and some important topics were glossed right over. However, this did not detract from what I gained from the book.
If you are serious about trying to build your own robot, start here. By the time you finish with this book, you will be ready for more advanced topics.
